The Annual Carnel Smith Summer Youth Football Camp on behalf of the
Mentoring, Education, & Leadership Inc. was started in 2002. The camp
is held at Jesup W. Scott High School and is free to all individuals
3rd to 8th grades. Since its first year, the annual camp have had over
one hundred boys participate yearly. The campers are taught basic football
fundamentals, necessary social skills such as discipline, character building,
respect, and responsibilities to name a few.
All the instructors are volunteers with the majority being former Scott High
football players and mentees. Individuals such as Nate Washington (Pittsburgh Steelers),
Willis Barringer (Michigan), Ian Townsend (Navy Academy), Robert Campbell (Findlay)
and Brandon Foster (Walsh). In addition, the camp instructors
are fathers of the campers as well as Junior High football coaches.

Carnel Smith Summer Youth Football Camp also have volunteer medical staff who attends daily.
The health of the campers is the number one priority and the medical staff are a vital part of
the camp daily activities. The Scott High custodial staff has done an outstanding
job for the camp over the six years. They ensure all the facilities are accessible and cleaned
on a daily basis.
Carnel Smith Summer Youth Football Camp could not happen without the many generous donations from
individuals as well as companies. The camp is free to all who attend and the donations makes it
possible to work with the youth for the entire week. One of the biggest
donors comes from Mr. Yancy by providing the t-shirt design and printing each year. His outstanding
workmanship allows for the campers to have token of appreciation for atteding the camp.
Feed Lucas County Children(FLCC), Inc for the last 2 years has provided free lunches at the end of each camp day.
FLCC is a private non-profit organization and an advocacy for child hunger for Lucas County, especially during
the summer months when schools are out for the summer. FLCC has become the foundation for dozens of organizations
to prosper with their own mission in helping at-risk children.
In the past year, donors have mentioned that FLCC is having a bigger impact on the community than most people are
aware of. Summer of 2007 they produced a documentary film on disk that provides a great view of the day to day
operation. All these organizations depend on the meals as a foundation to their programs which in return draw
more children in need.
